Mobile vs Residential Proxies: Which Should You Use?
Mobile proxies route your traffic through real 4G/5G carrier connections, so a website sees the same kind of IP a phone on a cellular network has. Residential proxies route it through home broadband connections, so the site sees a household IP. Both are "real user" IPs, but they behave differently: mobile IPs are shared by many people at once through carrier-grade NAT, which makes them the highest-trust addresses on the internet, while residential IPs give you a far bigger pool, finer geo-targeting and a lower cost per GB. For most scraping, price monitoring and SEO work, residential wins on cost. For mobile-first platforms, app testing and accounts that must look like a phone, mobile is worth the premium. And when you need one fixed IP for weeks, neither is ideal: that's what static ISP proxies are for.
This guide explains how each type works, what the difference really means for block rates and budget, and how to pick the right one for your workload.
TL;DR
Pick rotating residential for web scraping, price monitoring, SERP tracking, ad verification and anything that needs lots of IPs in lots of cities. CleanProxies residential starts as low as $0.63/GB, with a 50M+ IP pool in 190+ countries.
Pick mobile for social media management, mobile app and ad QA, and accounts on platforms that mostly see phone traffic. CleanProxies mobile starts as low as $0.79/GB, on 10M+ real 4G/5G IPs.
Pick static ISP when one account needs one stable, dedicated IP: CleanProxies ISP proxies start as low as $0.75/IP with unlimited bandwidth, 0 fraud score IPs, <20ms latency and 100Gbps ports.
Not sure? Run the $4.99 trial and test your own target before you commit.

How mobile proxies work
A mobile proxy network is made of connections on cellular networks. You connect to a gateway with a username and password; the gateway forwards your request out through a 4G/5G connection, and the target site sees that connection's carrier IP and carrier ASN.
The interesting part is how carriers hand out IPs. There are far more phones than public IPv4 addresses, so mobile operators use carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT): many subscribers share one public IP at the same time, and the address in front of any one phone changes throughout the day. A 2016 measurement study found CGNAT in more than 90% of cellular networks, and Cloudflare's own research notes that "hundreds or even thousands of clients" can appear behind a single CGNAT address.
That's why mobile IPs carry so much trust. If a platform bans a mobile IP outright, it doesn't block one person; it blocks every real customer behind that address. So platforms prefer softer measures on mobile ranges (a challenge, a slower response, a session check) over hard IP bans. For you, that means a mobile IP that gets flagged usually recovers fast, and the next rotation gives you a fresh address with a clean history. We covered the basics in Mobile Proxies Explained; this guide is about when that trust is worth paying for.
How residential proxies work
Residential proxies use IPs that internet providers assign to homes: cable, fibre and DSL connections. To a website, a request through a residential proxy looks like someone browsing from their living room in a specific city.
Unlike mobile ranges, home connections usually get one public IP per household. That gives residential proxies two big advantages:
Scale. There are many more home connections than mobile gateway IPs, so the pool is larger. CleanProxies residential gives you 50M+ IPs across 190+ countries.
Precision. Each IP maps cleanly to a city and region, so city/state targeting is accurate. If you're checking local search results in Chicago or prices shown to shoppers in Texas, residential is the natural fit.
The trade-off: a household IP is "one user", so a site can block it without collateral damage. That's rarely a problem with rotation, because each request (or each sticky session) gets a different IP from a huge pool.
For a deeper look at session control, see Rotating vs Sticky Sessions.
The real differences that matter
1. Trust and block rates
Both types are far more trusted than datacenter IPs. Between the two, mobile is the stronger signal because of CGNAT. In practice:
On mobile-first platforms (social apps, app stores, mobile ad networks), mobile IPs match the traffic those platforms expect and see the fewest challenges.
On general websites (e-commerce, search engines, travel, real estate), a clean residential IP is already "a normal visitor", and the extra trust of mobile rarely changes your success rate.
2. IP sharing and session stability
Mobile IPs are shared by design and can change when the carrier reassigns them. Sticky mobile sessions hold an IP for as long as the carrier keeps it, which is fine for most tasks but not a guarantee of one IP for days. Residential sticky sessions on CleanProxies hold for up to 90 minutes.
If you need the exact same IP for weeks (one ad account, one marketplace store, one social profile), neither rotating type is the right tool. Use a dedicated static ISP proxy: 100% dedicated, never shared, same IP every request.
3. Speed
Mobile speed depends on the cell network; residential speed on the home line. CleanProxies mobile proxies run at <0.6s response time, and residential speed varies with the connection the IP sits on. For raw speed, static ISP proxies are in a different league: <20ms latency on 100Gbps network ports, with unlimited bandwidth and threads.
4. Geo-targeting
Both CleanProxies products support country, state and city targeting across 190+ countries. Residential has more IPs per city, so it's the better choice when you need many distinct IPs in one location (for example, rank tracking hundreds of keywords from the same metro).
5. Cost
Both are billed per GB, and CleanProxies data never expires, so you never lose what you paid for. Residential starts as low as $0.63/GB and mobile as low as $0.79/GB. The gap is small, which changes the old rule of thumb ("only use mobile when you must"): at CleanProxies prices, mobile is affordable enough to use wherever it adds trust.
Key stats
146 EB per month: global mobile data traffic at the end of 2025, forecast to reach 328 EB/month by 2031 (Ericsson Mobility Report).
8.84 billion mobile subscriptions and 2.94 billion 5G subscriptions in 2025 (Ericsson).
About 60% of worldwide web traffic now comes from mobile devices (StatCounter).
90%+ of cellular networks deploy carrier-grade NAT, versus a small minority of fixed broadband ISPs (Richter et al., arXiv 1704.01296).
3x: CGNAT IPs are rate-limited about three times more often than other IPs, even though their traffic looks more human, which is why platforms are working on detecting CGNAT to reduce collateral damage rather than banning it.
~2.3 MB: the median mobile home page weight in 2025 (HTTP Archive Web Almanac), a useful number for estimating how many GB a job will use.

Which should you pick? (by use case)
| Use case | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Web scraping at scale | Rotating residential | Huge pool, cheapest per GB, a fresh IP per request |
| Price monitoring on Amazon, Walmart and other stores | Rotating residential | City-accurate prices, many IPs per region |
| SEO rank tracking / Google Search | Rotating residential | Local SERPs need many IPs in one city |
| Ad verification | Mobile + residential | Check what both phone and desktop users see |
| Social media management (Instagram, TikTok) | Mobile or static ISP | Mobile for app-like traffic, ISP for one stable IP per profile |
| Mobile app and ad QA | Mobile | Real carrier IPs and carrier-specific content |
| Multi-accounting in anti-detect browsers | Static ISP | One dedicated IP per profile, for weeks |
| AI agents and browsing automation | Rotating residential | Wide coverage, per-task sessions (AI agents) |
A simple rule: if the platform lives on phones, use mobile. If it's a website you're reading data from, use residential. If an account needs the same IP every day, use ISP.
What the numbers mean for your budget
Because both rotating types bill per GB, cost comes down to how much data your job moves. With a median mobile page at roughly 2.3 MB, a crawler that loads full pages uses about 2.3 GB per 1,000 pages. Block images, fonts and media (most scrapers should) and that often drops below 0.5 GB per 1,000 pages. Hitting a JSON API instead of the page can cut it to a few MB.
So for 100,000 lightweight page loads (around 50 GB), the difference between residential and mobile at CleanProxies' volume pricing is a few dollars, not hundreds. That's why the decision should be driven by success rate on your target, not by price alone. Run the numbers for your own job with the proxy cost calculator, and see our full guide on how much proxies cost.
If your workload is bandwidth-heavy and runs on a fixed set of accounts, flip the math: static ISP proxies with unlimited bandwidth cost the same whether you move 1 GB or 10 TB.
How to test mobile vs residential on your own target
Don't guess: a 30-minute test answers the question for your exact site.
Pick one target and one task, e.g. loading 200 product pages or logging into one test account.
Run it on residential with rotation per request. Log status codes, challenges and response times.
Run the same job on mobile with the same concurrency.
Compare success rate first, then cost per successful request. Count 403, 429 and challenge pages as failures (our guide to testing proxy quality has a full checklist).
Check the IPs: run a sample through the IP lookup to confirm the ASN type (mobile carrier vs home ISP) and location.
Check for leaks in your browser setup with the WebRTC leak test, so your real IP never shows up next to the proxy.
Start small with the $4.99 trial. Create an account and grab the trial (5 ISP IPs for 1 hour, or 100 MB of data) and run steps 1 to 6 on real CleanProxies IPs.
Setting up the test in code? Our integration guides cover Python requests, Playwright, Puppeteer, Scrapy and curl, and anti-detect browsers like AdsPower and Multilogin.
Common mistakes when choosing
Using mobile for bulk scraping by default. It works, but residential gives you more IPs per city for the same job. Save mobile for the targets where it measurably lifts success.
Using rotating proxies for long-lived accounts. An account that logs in from a different IP every hour looks unusual. Give each account a dedicated ISP proxy.
Ignoring location consistency. Match the proxy's city or state to the account's history, time zone and language. See proxy locations in the United States.
Not blocking heavy assets. Images and video can multiply your GB usage several times over with no benefit to the data you collect.
Skipping the test. Two providers' "residential" pools can perform very differently. Read why clean IP quality matters before you scale.

Frequently Asked Questions
Mobile proxies route traffic through real 4G/5G carrier connections, where many users share each public IP through carrier-grade NAT. Residential proxies route traffic through home broadband connections, usually one IP per household. Mobile IPs carry the highest trust; residential gives a larger pool, more precise city targeting and a lower cost per GB.
Not for every job. Mobile proxies are best for mobile-first platforms, social media management and app or ad testing. For web scraping, price monitoring and SEO rank tracking, rotating residential proxies usually reach the same success rate at a lower cost. CleanProxies offers both: residential as low as $0.63/GB and mobile as low as $0.79/GB.
Carriers use carrier-grade NAT, so hundreds or thousands of real phone users can share one public IP. Banning that IP would block all of them, so platforms avoid hard bans on mobile ranges and use softer checks instead.
Use mobile proxies for app-like social traffic, or a dedicated static ISP proxy when each profile needs the same IP every day. Avoid per-request rotating IPs for long-lived accounts. CleanProxies ISP proxies start as low as $0.75/IP with unlimited bandwidth.
Run the same small job (for example 200 page loads) on residential and on mobile, compare success rate and cost per successful request, and check sample IPs with an IP lookup. The CleanProxies $4.99 trial (5 ISP IPs for 1 hour, or 100 MB) lets you test on real IPs first.
No. Data on both mobile and rotating residential plans never expires, so you can use it on your own schedule.
