A shadowban is when a platform quietly limits the visibility of an account's posts, comments or profile without notifying the owner. The account still works, but its content stops appearing in feeds, search or recommendations for other people.

How shadowbans work

Platforms rarely use the word. They describe reduced distribution, visibility filtering or recommendation eligibility. In practice an account or post is left out of discovery surfaces, such as hashtag pages, search suggestions, Explore or For You feeds, while followers may still see it. Some forms are stricter: on Reddit, a site-wide shadowban makes a user's posts and comments invisible to everyone else.

Instagram now shows part of this openly: Account Status says whether your content is eligible to be recommended to non-followers. Most other platforms leave you to infer it.

Common causes

Shadowbans are mostly about behaviour and content, flagged by automated systems or reports. The network you use is one supporting signal among many.
