What Is IP Reputation?

IP reputation is how trustworthy an IP address looks to websites, mail servers and anti-fraud systems, based on its network, its history and any blocklists it appears on. Good reputation means ordinary treatment; poor reputation brings CAPTCHAs, extra checks and blocks.

how it works

How IP reputation works

No single authority keeps one reputation per IP. Each site, CDN and security vendor builds its own view from the signals it can see, and many share data through commercial feeds and public blocklists. The main inputs are:

Many vendors condense these signals into one number per IP, the fraud score. Reputation is the wider picture behind it.

IP reputation: key points
  • Network type: the ASN shows whether the IP belongs to a consumer ISP, a mobile carrier or a hosting provider.
  • Blocklists: DNS-based blocklists (DNSBLs) list IPs seen sending spam, running open proxies or taking part in attacks.
  • Behaviour history: request rates, failed logins, chargebacks and abuse reports tied to the IP over weeks or months.
  • Neighbours: problems across the same /24 subnet can lower the standing of every address in it.
why it matters

Why IP reputation matters for proxy users

A proxy inherits whatever reputation its IP already has. A clean IP gets the same pages a regular visitor gets; a burned one returns CAPTCHAs, 403 responses or empty results before you have sent a single unusual request. On a shared proxy, other customers keep shaping that reputation while you use it.

Reputation is also something you build. Steady, reasonable request rates from a dedicated IP keep its history clean; bursts that hit a site's rate limits add negative history that lasts. Check a new IP before you rely on it:

CleanProxies static ISP proxies are 100% dedicated IPs on US carrier ASNs, never shared, so their reputation depends on your own traffic and nobody else's.

IP reputation: what it means for you
  • Run it through the IP blacklist checker to see which DNSBLs list it.
  • Look up the ASN and organisation, and confirm they match the proxy type you bought.
  • Send a few real requests to the sites you care about and watch for CAPTCHAs and 403s. That is the test that counts.

Check it against DNS-based blocklists, look up its ASN and organisation, and test it on the sites you plan to use. A blocklist check alone misses each site's own history for the IP.
