What Is Browser Fingerprinting?

Browser fingerprinting is identifying a browser from the combination of many small technical details it exposes, such as its user agent, screen size, fonts, time zone, graphics output and TLS handshake. It needs no cookie, and the fingerprint stays the same when the IP address changes.

how it works

How browser fingerprinting works

A script on the page reads what the browser reports about itself and the device it runs on. Each value on its own is common; the combination often is not. Thousands of browsers share a screen size, far fewer share it with the same font list, GPU, time zone and language settings. The script hashes the combination into an identifier and compares it with visits it has seen before. Typical signals:

Browser fingerprinting: key points
  • Navigator and screen: user agent, platform, language list, CPU core count, screen resolution and colour depth.
  • Rendering: canvas and WebGL drawings, which differ slightly by GPU, driver and operating system, and AudioContext output.
  • Environment: installed fonts, time zone, touch support and media devices.
  • Network level: the TLS handshake and HTTP/2 settings, which identify the browser or library before any page code runs.
why it matters

Why fingerprinting matters for proxy users

A proxy changes one signal, the IP. The fingerprint travels with the browser, so two accounts opened in the same browser through different proxies still look like one device. Sites also check that signals agree: a US exit IP with a browser time zone on another continent, or a Windows user agent with a macOS font list, is the kind of mismatch anti-fraud systems look for.

If you manage several of your own accounts, the usual setup is one browser profile per account, each with its own stable fingerprint and its own static IP, kept unchanged over time. Anti-detect browsers manage those profiles and take a proxy through the standard host, port, username and password fields.

CleanProxies static ISP proxies keep the same dedicated US carrier IP all month, so each profile's IP stays as stable as its fingerprint.

Browser fingerprinting FAQs

Straight answers about Browser fingerprinting.

No. A proxy changes only the IP address. The fingerprint comes from the browser and device, so you need separate browser profiles to keep accounts apart.
