What Is a Headless Browser?

A headless browser is a full browser engine, such as Chromium, Firefox or WebKit, that runs without a visible window and is controlled by code. It loads pages, runs JavaScript and renders content exactly like a normal browser, but your script does the clicking and reading.

how it works

How headless browsers work

Automation libraries such as Playwright, Puppeteer and Selenium start a browser process and talk to it over a control protocol. Your script tells it to open a URL, wait for an element, fill a form or take a screenshot, and reads the rendered page back. Because a real engine does the work, pages that build their content with JavaScript render fully, which a plain HTTP request cannot do.

The browser sends all of its traffic through one proxy set at launch, or per context in Playwright. Every image, script, font and API call made by the page goes through that proxy, so one page view can mean dozens of requests and several megabytes of data.

why it matters

Why headless browsers matter for proxy users

Headless browsers are the standard tool for testing your own web app, checking how a page renders in another country, monitoring prices on JavaScript-heavy sites and verifying that ads display as intended. They also change how you budget proxies.

Headless browser: what it means for you
  • Bandwidth: block images, media and fonts you don't need, or use proxies billed per IP rather than per GB.
  • Sessions: keep one exit IP per browser context, with a static IP or a sticky session, since a page load spans many requests.
  • Consistency: set the browser's locale and time zone to match the proxy location. A mismatch is one of the signals in browser fingerprinting.
  • Resources: each browser instance uses far more CPU and memory than an HTTP client, so plan concurrency around your server as well as the target site.

Example: Playwright with an authenticated proxy

The Playwright setup guide covers per-context proxies, and the Puppeteer guide shows the same in Node.js. For browser workloads, CleanProxies static ISP proxies come with unlimited bandwidth and threads, so heavy pages cost nothing extra.

Python PlaywrightPython
from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright

with sync_playwright() as p:
    browser = p.chromium.launch(proxy={
        "server": "http://HOST:PORT",
        "username": "USER",
        "password": "PASS",
    })
    page = browser.new_page()
    page.goto("https://example.com")
    print(page.title())
    browser.close()

Dedicated IPs on US carrier ASNs with unlimited bandwidth and threads, never shared.

starting from$0.75/IP

Dedicated static IPs registered to US and Canadian ISPs. The address stays the same for as long as you hold it, with unlimited bandwidth and HTTP(S) or SOCKS5 access.
