What Is a Sticky Session?

A sticky session keeps the same exit IP on a rotating proxy for a chosen period, instead of switching to a new IP on every request. It is how you run multi-step flows, such as a login and the pages after it, through one address.

how it works

How sticky sessions work

A rotating gateway normally picks a new exit IP for each connection. To make it stick, you add a session identifier, and usually a duration, to the proxy username. The gateway maps that identifier to one exit IP and keeps sending your traffic through it until the time runs out. A new identifier gets a new IP, so you can run many parallel sessions, each on its own address.

On residential and mobile pools the IP belongs to a real device, which can go offline before the session ends. When that happens the gateway moves the session to another IP, so your code should notice failed connections and restart the flow cleanly rather than assume the IP will last.

why it matters

Why sticky sessions matter for proxy users

Websites tie sessions to more than cookies. If the IP changes between the login page and the dashboard, many sites ask for re-verification or log the session out, and a cart or form can reset mid-flow. Sticky sessions keep the IP consistent for as long as the task needs it, while still letting you spread separate tasks across many IPs.

Pick the shortest duration that covers the flow. Longer sessions concentrate more requests on one address and are more exposed to the device going offline. When a task needs the same IP for days or weeks, use a static IP instead. Rotating vs sticky sessions walks through more examples.

CleanProxies rotating residential proxies rotate per request or hold sticky sessions of 5, 10, 15, 30 or 60 minutes or 24 hours, and the same session options apply to mobile proxies.
