What Is a Backconnect Proxy?

A backconnect proxy is a single gateway address that forwards each connection through an IP chosen from a large pool. You always connect to the same host and port, and the gateway picks the exit IP according to your rotation, session and location settings.

how it works

How a backconnect proxy works

Behind the gateway sits a pool of exit nodes, such as home broadband connections or mobile devices. When your client connects, the gateway authenticates you, reads the options in your request, chooses an exit from the pool and relays the connection through it. The website sees the exit IP, never the gateway address.

Options usually travel in the proxy username, because that is the one field every client can send. A username can carry a country, a city, a session ID and a session length, so changing location means changing the username, not the host or port. The exact format is provider-specific, so copy it from your dashboard.

Backconnect proxy: key points
  • Rotating mode: each new request or connection gets a new exit IP.
  • Sticky mode: requests with the same session ID keep the same exit IP for a set time; see sticky sessions.
  • Targeting: the gateway limits the choice to exits in a country, region, city or ASN.
why it matters

Why backconnect proxies matter for proxy users

Gateways make large pools practical. You configure one endpoint instead of a list of thousands of IPs, and rotation happens without code changes. The trade-offs: you do not choose the individual IP, and pool IPs are used by other customers over time, so results can vary from one exit to the next.

With CleanProxies rotating residential proxies and mobile proxies, you connect to an HTTP(S) gateway host and port with username:password, and choose per-request rotation or sticky sessions from 5 minutes to 24 hours. Rotating vs sticky sessions explains which to pick.

The gateway connects back out through an exit node in its pool on your behalf, so the address you connect to is never the address websites see.
