What Is IP Whitelisting for Proxies?

IP whitelisting, also called IP allowlisting, is a way to authenticate to a proxy by the address you connect from. You register your public IP with the provider, and the proxy accepts connections from that address without a username or password.

how it works

How IP whitelisting works

Every TCP connection carries the IP address of the machine that opened it. When a connection reaches a whitelisted proxy, the proxy compares that source address with the list on your account. A match is let through; anything else is refused or answered with 407 Proxy Authentication Required. The proxy URL then needs no credentials: http://HOST:PORT.

The address that counts is your public IPv4 address as the proxy sees it, not the private address of your laptop such as 192.168.1.20. Behind a home router, an office firewall or a cloud NAT gateway, that is the router's or gateway's address. Check it with what is my IP from the same machine and network that will use the proxy, and register the IPv4 address rather than an IPv6 one.

why it matters

Why IP whitelisting matters for proxy users

Whitelisting suits fixed servers and tools that cannot send a Proxy-Authorization header, such as some browser launch flags and desktop apps. It is a poor fit for laptops that move between networks.

CleanProxies supports IP whitelisting of 1 to 20 IPv4 addresses on static ISP proxies and ISP subnet proxies; rotating residential and mobile proxies use username:password.

IP whitelisting: what it means for you
  • If your ISP uses CGNAT, your public IP is shared with other subscribers, so whitelisting it would let them use your proxies too. Use credentials instead.
  • Serverless functions and autoscaling servers often leave through changing addresses; give them a fixed outbound IP or use credentials.
  • When a working setup suddenly returns 407, check whether your public IP changed before anything else.
