What Is an HTTP Proxy?

An HTTP proxy is a server that accepts HTTP requests from a client and sends them on to websites from its own IP address. For https:// sites it does not read the request; it opens an encrypted tunnel with the CONNECT method instead.

how it works

How an HTTP proxy works

A client configured with an HTTP proxy connects to the proxy, not to the website. For a plain http:// URL it puts the full URL in the request line, the absolute form described in RFC 9112: GET http://example.com/page HTTP/1.1. The proxy connects to example.com, forwards the request and passes the response back. Because it sees the whole request, it can add or remove headers, cache responses and log URLs.

For an https:// URL the client sends CONNECT example.com:443 instead, and the proxy opens a TCP tunnel. TLS then runs end to end between the client and the website. The HTTPS proxy and CONNECT page covers that step.

    What the client sends
    GET http://host/path with all headers
    What the proxy can see
    Full URL, headers and body
  • 2

    https:// URL

    What the client sends
    CONNECT host:443, then encrypted TLS
    What the proxy can see
    Hostname, port and traffic volume
  • Authentication

    What the client sends
    A Proxy-Authorization header
    What the proxy can see

why it matters

Why HTTP proxies matter for proxy users

Almost every HTTP client supports HTTP proxies without extra libraries: curl, Python requests, Node.js, Scrapy, Playwright, Puppeteer and every browser. That makes them the default choice for web scraping, price monitoring and SERP tracking.

Every CleanProxies product works as an HTTP(S) proxy, from static ISP proxies with unlimited bandwidth to the rotating residential and mobile gateways.

HTTP proxy: what it means for you
  • Use the same http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT URL for both http and https traffic. The scheme describes how you reach the proxy, not the site you visit.
  • Send credentials with proxy authentication, or register your IP so no credentials are needed.
  • The proxy resolves hostnames itself, so an HTTP proxy does not leak DNS lookups the way socks5:// can.
  • For traffic that is not HTTP, use SOCKS5 instead.

HTTP proxy FAQs

Straight answers about HTTP proxy.

An HTTP proxy is reached over plain HTTP and uses CONNECT tunnels for https:// sites, so your traffic to the website is still encrypted. An HTTPS proxy is reached over TLS, which also encrypts the hop between you and the proxy, including your proxy credentials.
