What Is DHCP?

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is the protocol that gives a device its network settings automatically when it joins a network: an IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS servers. The address is lent for a set time, called a lease.

how it works

How DHCP works

DHCP is defined in RFC 2131 and runs over UDP ports 67 (server) and 68 (client). A device that has just connected has no address, so it broadcasts a request and the DHCP server, usually your router, answers. The exchange has four steps, known as DORA:

Before the lease runs out the client asks to renew it, normally keeping the same address. If the device stays away long enough for the lease to expire, the address can go to someone else.

  • StepDiscoverThe client broadcasts: is there a DHCP server here?
  • StepOfferThe server offers a free address and its settings
  • StepRequestThe client asks to take that offer
  • StepAcknowledgeThe server confirms and starts the lease clock
why it matters

Why DHCP matters for proxy users

ISPs use DHCP or similar systems to hand public IPs to home routers. That is where dynamic IPs come from, and it is why ordinary residential addresses change from time to time.

CleanProxies static ISP proxies keep the same US carrier IP for as long as you renew, with unlimited bandwidth and no lease changes.

DHCP: what it means for you
  • A home's public IP can change after a router restart, a long outage or ISP maintenance, so a residential IP is not guaranteed to belong to the same household next week.
  • Rotating residential pools are built on these changing consumer addresses, which is fine for scraping but not for anything that needs one fixed address.
  • A static IP is assigned permanently, not leased, so it suits allowlists and long-lived accounts.
  • Inside your own network, a DHCP reservation pins one device to one private address; it does not change your public IP.
