Open port checker
Find out whether ports on your public IP are reachable from the internet. Pick common ports or type your own, and see in seconds which are open, closed or filtered. Useful for confirming port forwarding for a game server, NAS, camera or remote desktop.
Our server opens one TCP connection per port and closes it straight away. No data is sent and nothing is stored.
How the port check works
- 1
We read the IP your request comes from
The same public address shown on What Is My IP. You can't type another one, so the tool can only test your own connection. - 2
Our server knocks on each port
It starts a TCP handshake on every port you chose, from outside your network, the way any visitor on the internet would. - 3
The answer tells us the state
A completed handshake means open, a reset means closed, and silence for three seconds means filtered. The connection is closed straight away and no data is sent.

Port forwarding not working? Check these
- Is the service running? Start the game server or app first. A port only shows as open while a program listens on it, and on all interfaces rather than 127.0.0.1 only.
- Does the forward point to the right device? Routers forward to a local IP such as 192.168.1.20. If your computer got a new one from DHCP, the rule points to nothing; reserve the address in the router.
- Is a local firewall blocking it? Windows Defender Firewall, macOS and Linux firewalls block incoming connections by default. Allow the app or the port.
- Are you behind CGNAT or double NAT? If the router's WAN address differs from the IP above, the router isn't the device facing the internet. Ask your provider for a public IP or bridge the second router.
- Does your provider block the port? Many home providers block port 25 for spam reasons, and some block 80 or 443. Use a higher port instead.
Checking a proxy instead?
This tool tests the ports of the connection you browse from. To find out whether a proxy's port accepts your connection, whether it needs authentication and which exit IP it gives you, paste it into the proxy checker. It tests HTTP(S) and SOCKS5 proxies from our server, up to ten at a time. Need a server to host a service on? Our VPS in Virginia run Windows or Linux and start at $24 a month.
Frequently asked questions
Something on your connection accepted a TCP connection on that port from the internet: a game server, a web server, remote desktop or a router feature. Open ports are how you host things, but every one is also a door that anyone can knock on, so only keep open the ones you need.
